Help:Navigation

From Open Lives

Jump to: navigation, search

When viewing any page on this wiki, you'll find three main navigation elements:

  1. The top left side of every page contains what is called the sidebar.
  2. The top of the page contains links extending from the left (called page tabs) that relate to the page currently displayed, its associated discussion and meta pages, the page history, and various other information or actions related to the particular page being viewed. Which tabs are displayed depends on your privileges on the wiki.
  3. At the very top of the page extending from the right you'll find links related to your personal user pages. If you are not logged-in, you'll see only a link to log in, which is not possible until you have become a registered user. As a logged-in user you'll have a collection of personal links, including ones to your user page and operational preferences.

Sidebar

The sidebar is displayed on the top left edge of each wiki page immediately below the site logo. Clicking the site logo will always take you back to the Entry Page. The sidebar provides access to important pages in the wiki via the site panel, a basic search box and a toolbox enabling you to perform useful tasks or access special information. The sidebar organization and its links can be configured differently and you are welcome to make suggestions for what should be included in it.

Site

The site sidebar appears on all wiki page displays and provides access to important pages of the wiki such as:

  • Open Lives Events, which contains a list and brief description of recent and upcoming events related to this wiki.
  • Recent changes, which contains a list of pages and change summaries that have been made anywhere on the wiki.
  • help, which lists many pages of information about usage of the wiki.

Toolbox

Which links are contained in the toolbox depends on the type of page you are viewing.

All pages (except special pages) also contain the following toolbox links:

  • “What links here” displays a list of the pages of this wiki which contain a link to the current page. This is helpful when you are looking for pages of related information. Such information can also be useful when a page has been altered and the editor needs to check whether links to this page are still relevant.
  • “Related changes" displays a list of all recent changes to the pages linked to from the current page. Recent changes to all templates used on the current page are also included in the list. The format of the Related changes page is similar to that of the Recent changes page, which appears in the navigation panel.

All pages contain the toolbox links:

  • “Upload file” displays a page that enables all registered and logged-in users to upload images and other files to the wiki. Uploaded files can be linked from or embedded in wiki pages. For information about uploading files, viewing files on the server and including them in wiki pages, see: managing files.
  • Specialpages” displays a list the wiki's special pages. In MediaWiki terminology, a special page is one that presents information about the wiki and/or allows access to operational activities for the wiki. For example, a list of registered users, statistics about the wiki such as the number of pages and number of page edits, system logs, a list of orphaned pages, and so on. The function and use of all special pages can be found at: special pages.

Page Tabs

The page tabs are displayed above the top of the page to the right of the site logo . Special pages only display the one tab for the page itself, since although they have choices information displayed within them, Special pages are not subject to any user alterations.

Page tabs enable you to perform actions or view pages that are related to the current article. The available default actions include: viewing, editing, and discussing the current article. The specific tabs displayed on your pages depend on whether or not you are logged into the wiki and whether you have sysop (administrator) privileges on the wiki. On special pages only the namespace tab is displayed.

All users have the following page tabs displayed:

  • "article" - displays on all pages with various names related to the namespace of the page being displayed.
  • "discussion" - displays as the second tab only on articles in the main namespace. Note that when a discussion namespace page is viewed, the article page becomes the second tab and vice versa.
  • "metapage" - displays on pages with namespaces for which it is appropriate to have meta comments on a separate page. If the leftmost tab is "article" then the metapage links to the meta comments for the article page. If the leftmost tab is "discussion" then the metapage tab links to the meta comments for the discussion page. For some namespaces where pages may need some discussion but do not warrant a separation of discussion and meta comments this tab is displayed as "discuss".
  • "view source" - only displayed when the user is not logged in. Enable the page source text and formatting code to be viewed and copied.
  • "history" - enables the reader to see the history of alterations of the page and comparisons of all pages in the history. For registered (and logged-in) users this page also enables reversions of page alterations.

The following page tabs are only displayed for logged-in users and depend on the user's privilege level:

  • "edit" - displayed in place of "view source" if your privileges enable editing of the page you are viewing, but will not be actually enabled if the page is currently protected.
  • "new" - only displayed on meta and discussion pages to enable new discussion threads to be started at the bottom of the page.
  • “move” - displayed on pages for which the privileges of the user enable page move.
  • "watch" - enables the registered user to add the page to hir watchlist.
  • "delete" - displayed on pages for which the privileges of the user enable page deletion.
  • “protect” - enables WikiWizards to protect pages (prevent alteration by discussers or editors for various reasons.

Section Tabs

Section tabs enable editing subsections of a page or replying to single sections (messages) of a discussion or metapage. They appear at the right edge of the page at the same vertical position as the section heading, except for the very top section (section 0) which has no heading except the page title itself.

  • "edit" - causes the display for editing of the section and all subsections (those with a lower level heading than the one requested).
  • "reply" - displays in the edit box the appropriate format for replying inline to the section as a message.

User Links

The user links are displayed at the very top of every wiki page above the page content and the page tabs, extending from the right. These links enable the logged-in user to access various pages of direct personal interest to hir. If you're not logged-in, you'll see only a link to log in, which is not possible until you have become a registered user.

  • “<username>'s page” - the logged-in user's username page, which only s/he can alter (except for WikiWizards).
  • "my metapage" - the metapage associated with the username page. As with any metapage this can be edited by any registered user. It is often used to leave messages for the user and one of the users preferences is to be notified by email of any changes to this page.
  • “my sandbox” - your own page for the purpose of experimenting with wiki editing and formatting, but which can be used for anything you wish. It has it's own associated metapage, which any registered user can edit.
  • “my notes” - your own page for the purpose of leaving notes for yourself, but which can be used for anything you wish. It has it's own associated metapage, which any registered user can edit.
  • “my preferences" - a special page containing many sets of personal usage options for the wiki.
  • “my watchlist” - a list of the pages that you are watching (will notified by email when any change is made to them). Pages can be added to this list by clicking the “watch” tab at the top of the page.
  • “my creations and edits” - a list of all wiki pages that you have creates and/or edited.
  • "log out” - clicking this logs you out of the wiki and returns with the same page with only the "log in" user tab showing.
